I am told these are common 3D printer related applications. ZH is one of the smallest pitch types of through-hole JST connector. Hozan P-707 will crimp larger JST contact types (2.5mm pitch and larger) better than the above two tools due to superior conductor crimping force. Not as well made but for the significantly lower price, it could be forgiven. The PAD-11 costs quite a bit more than the PA-09 but is significantly better made, contacts won’t get stuck in it after crimping, and it handles the smallest GH/SH types. Some may be familiar with the PA-09 – an expensive, crappy tool also designed for mainly JST contacts. Pictured above a two of the best available. Unlike many other connector families where there isn’t much in the way of good generic/budget crimp tools, there are many generic crimp tools specifically designed for JST contacts. Some of these (particularly for PH/XH) are frequently seen on eBay second hand, and may be worth watching out for if you crimp a lot of these connectors, as they are an order of magnitude easier to use than even the best generic tools.įor more obscure types, no hand tool is offered, however JST do sell a hand frame (YRS-XXX) for mounting dies for their MKS-L applicator (used in the AP-K2N crimping machine), a very expensive solution, and the only option for production/mission critical applications. I have listed the part numbers for these where available. These are mostly made by the German contract crimp tool manufacturer Wezag GmbH, will crimp the associated contacts perfectly and to specification, but are all expensive. JST offer high quality hand crimp tools for their popular connector families. Most will find it more convenient to source from eBay, however note that this is an unlikely source of genuine parts. Most are stocked by Digi-Key (US) and Farnell (UK). Where I specify part numbers, I’m only doing so for genuine parts. Note that compatible connectors are made by other manufacturers. Many of which are referred to as “JST Connectors” in various circles. On this page I’ll cover the most popular connectors from Japan Solderless Terminal. In the vernacular sense, precisely which type of connector is being referred to depends on who is using the term and in what context. ![]() “JST Connector” is either shorthand for a connector manufacturer called Japan Solderless Terminal, or a vernacular term for a range of different type of wire to board connectors, which either are, or resemble designs from Japan Solderless Terminal. ![]()

There's no interaction between the two extensions in their spec, nor any comments about the later allowing for runtime compression to those formats. GL_EXT_texture_compression_s3tc is explicitly only for loading and decompressing DXTC format textures of the types DXT1, DXT3, and DXT5. GL_SGIS_generate_mipmaps is explicitly only for handling uncompressed textures. Is it going to be faster than what you can generate in Unity? Probably. For Direct3D the spec actually defines what formats can be used, and any compressed textures are supposed to fail silently(!?), though I suspect it'll work there too for DXT1 & DXT5, at least for non-mobile Direct3D.īut yes, this is happening fully on the CPU, not the GPU. On Desktop, AMD & Nvidia will certainly accept DXT1/5 textures. I've heard some Mali devices will accept ETC1 textures, but that's a fairly simply format so it's plausible to do real time compression of those on a mobile device (but it's still going to be pretty slow). Something like ASTC takes a beefy desktop PC several seconds to minutes(!) to compress, so there's no way a mobile GPU can do it. Textures that are imported by Unity in the editor, or when calling tex.Compress() will generate the mipmaps on the CPU as part of the import and compression rather than on the GPU to ensure the CPU side has access to those mipmaps for storage & optional script level access.ĪFAIK if you try to upload a compressed texture and ask for automatic mipmap generation on a mobile device you'll either get an error, black mipmaps, or an uncompressed texture. Plus you really don't want to be generating mips from the compressed image, only from the uncompressed source, otherwise any compression artifacts will be amplified. GPUs hardware cannot generate mipmaps for compressed textures since GPUs don't have built in acceleration for re-compressing those textures and all mips must be using the same format as the top mip. Texture2DArray, Texture3D, and CubeMap all have similar setups.įor a RenderTexture, this is set by if mipmaps and auto generation are both enabled.Ĭompressed textures are different though. If you want to convert a PNG that has no transparency to a dds file with the best quality you should do this:Ĭonvert input.png -define dds:compression=dxt1 -define dds:cluster-fit=true output.Automatic, hardware generated mipmaps is enabled by default for all dynamically created uncompressed textures.įor a Texture2D, if the texture has mipmaps enabled (controlled by the Texture2D constructor), calling tex.Apply() on them to upload the texture to the GPU automatically generates the mipmaps on the hardware.

This was a big deal, because fewer than 8% of video game protagonists are Black women despite 73% of Black people identifying as gamers. It wasn't until March 2021 that it officially became Forspoken and devs revealed that the protagonist would be a Black woman named Frey Holland, voiced by Ella Balinska (2019's Charlie’s Angels movie). When Forspoken, which was developed by Luminous Productions and published by Square Enix, was announced in 2020, using the placeholder title Project Athia, the game was shrouded in mystery. At that point, I didn’t know how much longer I could take it. This 21-year-old woman character was making me feel very, very tired, and it was only halfway into a game that took me 16 hours to complete. The whole exchange made me wince, because Frey’s response felt bizarrely cruel in context. She repeats his words on destruction and corruption in a nasally, self-important tone, and Cuff objects before mocking Frey's voice in turn. You sound like a serial killer," Frey snaps. "Destruction and corruption are forms of creation in themselves," he points out. Still, the morning after escaping a magical storm, her talking bracelet companion, Cuff, points out that there's something about the chaos spreading around them that seems aceful. She's been thrust into a world even crueler than the one she used to call home, and she isn’t happy about it. Over the course of Forspoken, now out on PlayStation 5 and PC, its protagonist, Frey Holland, is very angry. Prices are accurate and items in stock as of the time of publication. Wood bindings are available in colors for example, sometimes a very thin strip of red trim is used amongst black and white bindings. Laminated wood and plastic trims come in laminated combinations such as black/white/black (referred to as b/w/b). There are quite a number of decorative strip materials available to customize your bindings. If you install 0.120" binding in a slightly smaller channel, you can scrape away the excess and achieve in-between sizes. Because it's so wide, small variations in width produced by sanding and scraping aren't obvious (also true of 0.090" binding). ![]() The 0.090" width is another good choice when you want to overhang the fret crown onto the binding.Ġ.120" The width of 0.120" binding leaves a good safety margin for scraping and sanding. Also, 0.060" provides a good width when you want the fret crown to lay over the binding at the ends of the frets.Ġ.090" This is a fairly wide binding that's often used alone, as a single strip of white or cream (on Les Paul Customs, for example). It makes a good outer binding when adding purfling (for example, a black/white/black inlay inside the binding). If the binding sticks out over the edge of the instrument, it needs to be sanded or scraped flush, and this will show up as a thin spot in this already-thin binding.Ġ.060" The difference in width between 0.040" and 0.060" is substantial, and the 0.060" width is popular. It doesn't provide much width to work with, so the channel holding it must be very uniform and accurate. Plastic bindings are available in white, cream, or black in these widths:Ġ.040" This narrow binding is often found on older vintage guitars, banjos, and mandolins. Acetone (a common solvent used with plastic), and other solvents used in finishing are also flammable. Fire Hazard! Plastic bindings, along with their shavings and dust, are very flammable.Keep the work area well-ventilated to evacuate dust and solvents.Wear protective gloves when handling chemicals such as finishes.Wear eye protection when using tools, glues, and finishes.Hand tools, power tools, finishes and glues are all hazardous if misused. These instructions cover the basic techniques used to bind guitars and other stringed instruments. They can be clear-finished along with the wood, or kept free of colored finishes so they provide a visual contrast. They are sanded and smoothed to make them level with the surrounding wood. When bindings contain extra decorative strips that aren't exposed on the edges of the guitar, these strips are often called "purflings."īindings and purflings are installed during the building process, before a finish is put on the instrument. They can be plain or fancy: a simple white strip or an intricate decoration made of many laminated pieces ("herringbone" is a popular example).
